15 Time-Saving Tips For Caregivers: Simple Ways to Find Margin In Your Day
Share
If you are a medical mom like me, you already now - extra time isn't just hard to find, it's practically non-existent. Between managing appointments, therapies, medication meals, and all the behind the scenes responsibilities, it can feel like you're running on empty with no end in sight.
You are not alone. I see you, I am you.
As a medical mom and caregiver myself, I've learned (often the hard way, lol) how precious every minute can be, and how a few simple time saving strategies can create just enough time to allow you to pause, pray, and maybe even a hot cup of coffee, or for me a cold Diet Dr. Pepper!
Today, I want to share 15 practiical time-saving tips specifically for caregivers. these tried and true tips can help you free up just enough time to make space to breathe, take a few minutes of self-care time, or whatever makes your life easier. Because I know who busy our lives are, I also created a free printable version of this list so can you can it in your planner, or stick it up on the fridge.
Here they are:
- Batch Similar Tasks: Whether it's returning phone calls, paying bills, or organizing paperwork, grouping similar tasks into one time block cuts down on mental switching and saves time.
- Meal Prep in Batches: Cook once, eat twice (or three times!) Prepping a few staple ingredients each week, like chopped veggies, pre-cooked chicken, or freezer-friendly casseroles, makes meals quicker and smoother.
- Create a "Care Command Center: Use a disc-bound planner or binder to keep track of medications, provider info, emergency contacts, and appointment notes. Everything in one place equals fewer lost minutes and fewer headaches. Hint: The Devotional Planner for Caregivers is perfect for this!
- Use a Medication Organizer With Alarms: Weekly Pill Sorters + phone alarms equals peace of mind. You won't have to wonder "Did I give that dose already?" again.
- Automate What You Can: Set up auto-payments for bills, auto-refills for prescriptions, and subscription deliveries for your most used supplies. Let technology lighten the load.
- Establish Morning and Evening Routines: Daily routines help you start and end your day peacefully without the chaos. A routine doesn't have to be fancy, it just needs to be consistent. (This is a hard one for me.)
- Post a Weekly Family Chart: You can avoid the "What's happening today?" scramble with a dry-erase board, chalkboard, or wall planner that outlines appointments, school events, and must-do's.
- Keep a Go-Bag Packed: A small backpack with essentials like snacks, wipes, important paperwork, comfort items, phone and ipad chargers, and emergency meds, can be a game changer when appointments or emergencies come up fast.
- Use Voice Assistants or Notes Apps: Let Siri, Google, or Alexa do the remembering for you. Set reminders, make grocery lists, or jot down questions for the doctor while your hands are full.
- Assign Theme Days: "Taco Tuesday", "Form-Fill Friday", or "Laundry Day", not only sound fun, but they're also smart. Predictable patterns reduce decisions and make the week flow smoother. (This is one of my favs!)
- Say No To The Extra: Protect your time. You don't have to do it all. (By the way, you can't.) Give yourself permission to say no without guilt.
- Create a Master Medical Sheet: One simple page that includes diagnoses, medications, allergies, and provider info. Print it, and update it, and keep copies in your planner, purse, and car. You will feel more peace when you also have the information you need at your fingertips. (I always have my planner with me wherever I go.)
- Set Up A Shortcut Station: Designate a small basket or drawer for your most-used caregiver tools, Pulse ox, thermometer, lotion, pen, lip balm, so they are always within reach.
- Block Time For You: Yes, seriously, Even 5-10 minutes of rest or stillness matters. I know it's hard, but put it your planner like an appointment, and keep it. You are important.
- Pray On The Go: God doesnt require a perfect set-up to meet with your. Talk to him while you are folding laundry, driving to therapy, or waiting in line at the pharmacy. His Word says in 1 Thessalonians 5:116-17, "Always be joyful. Never stop praying." We can't do this with our own strength. We have to rely on him. Talk to him anytime, anywhere.
